Children of God
‘See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.’ 1 John 3:1
I love the way John has to add on ‘ for that is what we are’ at the end.
He is making a point and then making sure the hearer got the point not just once , but several times.
‘Beloved we are God’s children now…Little children let no one deceive you…’
Why was it hard for John’s original readers of his letter to hear this and understand it?
Because it is the same for us too.
If you really think about it the magnitude of that statement is immense – we are called children of God, God is our Father – just like our natural fathers only perfect, with the same intimate knowledge of us and total love for all that we do, with complete care and compassion and lifelong support.
We are also all children – compared to God and his perfection – all of us are immature and all have some growing to do. But in God’s total parental embrace and guidance we can all develop in our maturity in Jesus.
So often we pray ‘ Our Father’ without really thinking of the consequences in saying this, but when we fully accept God’s love and personal attention to us, it will transform us forever.
